House History

About Chi Gamma Epsilon

A Legacy of Brotherhood at 7 Webster Avenue

Chi Gamma Epsilon is one of Dartmouth College’s most enduring and respected fraternities, with a history that dates back over a century. Founded in 1904 as Beta Gamma, the fraternity quickly grew in prominence, earning national recognition as the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Kappa Sigma in 1905.

By 1914, the brotherhood raised funds to construct the first house at 7 Webster Avenue, laying the foundation for a fraternity built on camaraderie, leadership, and resilience. As membership expanded, the house was rebuilt in 1937, with significant fundraising efforts led by Ives Atherton ‘24. Over the decades, Chi Gamma Epsilon has evolved, adapting to the needs of its members while preserving a deep commitment to its values.

The House at 7 Webster Avenue

Located in the heart of Dartmouth’s fraternity row, 7 Webster Avenue has been home to generations of Chi Gamma Epsilon brothers.

The house has undergone several renovations to accommodate the growing fraternity.

  • 1937: Complete reconstruction of the house to accommodate a larger brotherhood.

  • 2005: Structural upgrades, basement improvements, and new social spaces.

  • 2011: Full basement renovation, made possible by generous alumni contributions.

  • 2016: Infrastructure improvements, including enhancements to study areas and common rooms.

  • 2023: Wildflower garden in memory of Sam Gawel ‘23.

Throughout its history, the house has remained a symbol of the fraternity’s enduring presence at Dartmouth.
